Whether it be for personal motivation, as a productivity booster or just for a general good laugh, Podcasts have long been a source of entertainment for me. Previously they were ideal for filling the void on my hour-long car trip commutes to the office but now they have settled into a new niche; keeping me company from home while I get my head around working remotely.
So familiar are they to me that I often forget, not everyone in the world is assimilated to perks of being part of a podcasting community.
For those in the know, these weekly soundbites have settled into an important place in our lives because they allow us to immediately tap into interests, mining the vein of our curiosities. They give us comfort, assuring us that we are not alone, allowing us to revel in the discovery that others out there care about the same things we do. And in a time where we are being restricted from the people we love or the activities we usually turn to, these downloads hold a special place in our personal lives now more than ever before.
But I must stress that not ALL podcasts translate to a 10 point guide to bettering yourself, your body or your business. Some are just a delicious indulgence for your ears. My favourite of late has been from journalist Phoebe Judge, the host of the uber-popular Criminal podcast turned part-time literary fiction narrator in the time of COVID-19. As a way of reaching out to her audience during this unusual situation (aka a time where getting any story other than the New ‘Big C’ is near impossible), she started a podcast where she reads a chapter of Agatha Christie’s The Mysterious Affair at Styles. Something about her voice is melodically calming and takes the edge off the 24-hour doomsday news cycle.
Considering there are so many, quality pieces of podcasting content out there though, how does one figure out which ones are really worth a listen? In the spirit of digital marketing, I’ve tested and optimised to put together a list of my top 5 positivity-boosting podcasts offering a mix of business and pleasure. Enjoy!
